'Declaration of freedom should equip us ratify nationhood'



The President of The Gambia Adama Barrow send a strong message to the Gambians that declaration of our freedom should equip us to ratify nationhood and patriotism as genuine Gambian nationalists.

“Today marks 54th anniversary of the day that ushers our motherland into the world as a sovereign nation, while is a day of celebration and jubilation. This opportunities task us as a nation to take our successes, challenges and progress since the attainment of nationhood. The national day also provide an opportunity to hold the government in office accountable to the people.”

The president was speaking yesterday at the celebration of the 54th independence held at the McCarthy square in Banjul.

Barrow stated that to be patriotic citizens contributing effectively to nation building, it is vital to engage in independence, critical and constructive talks and action, honesty and decides to improve living conditions in the country.

The president explained that the country people most love our nation and sacrifice in times of needs, adding that to this end, we must embrace nationalism to give our country a hemming character. He said this means rejecting all sources of political discrimination and extremism.

He added that our sovereignty should be marked by economic independency and the capacity to generate resources and funds for investment and judicious spending. “We have learnt also that independence rest on working with responsibly leadership that allows for diversity, choice and acting on correct decision.”
