Gambia receive report on electricity access

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MOPE) with other stakeholders in the energy sector has yesterday received report from the World Bank on electricity access in the Sub-Saharan African. The book dissemination was held at the MOPE, alongside Busubi turntable highway. Speaking during the dissemination, Hon. Fafa Sanyang, the minister MOPE explained that as key stakeholders in the energy sector, they deemed it necessary to invite stakeholders at all time to share valuable information or knowledge on energy. Commonwealth meridian to support Gambia’s sovereign debt management

The ministry of finance and economic affairs has disclosed that commonwealth meridian will support sovereign debt management in The Gambia. The commonwealth secretariat’s new public debt management system and commonwealth meridian designed to manage sovereign debt, will replace the commonwealth’s flagship software tool CS-DRMS, which is currently used by more than 60 countries. According to the ministry, The Gambia government has been selected as one of the early adopters of the new system following the handover of the system by the developers in January 2019. The system which is web based has enhanced functionalities to manage critical public debt portfolios such as borrowing, lending, contingent liabilities and financial derivatives. 6 resign from GDC

Five members and one executive member of The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) have on Saturday resigned from the party for personnel matters. The members include Ali Nget, who contested as parliamentarian for Old Yundum Constituency; Rina Mendy, first female artist to join GDC, Samba Nget known as Pa Nget, GDC Old Yundum Constituency Chairman, Abdoulie Cham, Head of Research, Strategy and Policy, GDC and Momodou Sowe, Kunkujang Village Chairman. According to the media officer at GDC Modou Musa Njie, confirmed the news but adding that they didn’t know the reason behind their leaving. He said only one is an executive member to the party. Mambayik Njie, the GDC spokesperson has also confirmed the news, saying that they have the right to leave or stay. “This will not move GDC because these are people who can turn to any party at any time they wish. I have been in politics and I know this will not impacted to our party,” he said.

Training for preventive measures on money laundering underway

  The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of The Gambia under the support of Strengthening Anti-Money Laundering Capacities in West Africa (SAMWA), in collaboration with Inter-Governmental Action Group against money laundering in West Africa (GIABA), have started a training for preventive measures on money laundering. The training started yesterday at a local hotel in Senegambia. Alagie Darboe the director of financial intelligence unit and GIABA national correspondent explained that this is the second session of a series of training programs organised by FIU on money laundering.   He said the project is funded by the European Union in collaboration with GIABA, with the aim of improving the Anti-Money laundering and counter financing of terrorism regimes in West African states. GPU trained stakeholders on freedom of expression, access to information

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has recently trained stakeholders from the music industry, theatre, filmmakers and producers on freedom of expression and access to information. The training was held over the weekend at Baobab Hotel. The workshop is part of the GPU tow-year project entitled ‘Enhancing Media Government Relations to improve the legal environment for freedom of expression in The Gambia’. The project is funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) and was launched in April 2017. The idea of the training is to encourage the artistes to build songs, theatre and films around freedom of speech. The participants are expected to be represented on the Civil Society Organisation (CSO) coalition on freedom of expression.
