Police turn down 3 years Jotna permit ahead of Monday's protest

The Office of the Inspector General of Police has decided not to give a permit to the Anti-government protesters (3 years Jotna), in order to carry out their planned protest to come this January 20th, due to compelling national security and public safety concerns.

The pressure group is calling on President Adama Barrow to step down after three years as per the coalition agreement, the movement, however was granted a permit last month to demonstrate. The demo that was carried out by the movement was ended with a petition submitted to the president through the government spokesperson Ebrima Sankara, demanding the president to step down before January 16.

The anti government protesters vowed that with or without permit, they will take the streets next week to defend what they described as Constitutional and agreement to The Gambian people.

With their concern for the president to step down in the coming days, another group supporting the president’s five years mandate, are also ready to defend the presidency for five years, while emphasized that if the 3 years Jotna take to the streets next week, will be defined as Coup D’Etate and they will be dealt with accordingly.

In this regard, the Office of the Inspector General of Police acting in accordance with Section 178 of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, vow to continue to deliver on its mandate of protecting life and properties as well as maintaining law and order.
