NAWEC urged to renew commitment to safe drinking water
Amid the rise of concerns about the quality of water coming from NAWEC water sources, citizens urged the company to renew its commitment to providing clean and safe drinking water to its customers.
For the past
week, many people raised a series of concerns about the change of water colour
in some taps. This is seen as a risk factor, thus urging the company to take
visiting tour of its facilities and find out the circumstances leading to such
concerns.
Ousman G
Darboe, a resident of Latrikunda German narrated: “Last week we go the whole
day without water and around 5PM, the water came but the colour was changed and
we could see rusted metals in the water.”
He further
noted that it was so scary and that he shared the videos for people to know
what was happening. Mr. Darboe warned this can even cause kidney disease.
“The water we
consume daily is a concern. Although water is colourless, this was totally
different from normal tap water. I think it’s scary,” he stated.
He urged NAWEC
that since they are in public office and receiving salaries through taxes
collected from citizens, they should always be serious about the health and
safety of people. He continued that NAWEC should regularly check or monitor
their tanks, water quality and sanitation in order to prevent contamination of
water.
Speaking to
Lamin Sanneh, a resident of Willingara, confirmed once realized the change of
water colour in his tap, adding that he was surprised and couldn’t
ascertain the reasons. He urged NAWEC to be touring around, especially during
the rainy season. He said there could be broken piles that could cause such an
unnoticed problem in its main water sources.
“We may not
blame NAWEC at all times because they might not be aware of everything that is
happening across the country. It’s the right of the customers to report
anything of concern. I also asked for a double up in their efforts to
cater for our needs,” he said.
