Gambian eye expert celebrated on World Sight Day

As the world celebrates World Sight Day under the theme ‘love your eyes at work’, Muhammeh Lamin F Kinteh, operations coordinator at Onsight EssilorLuxottica Foundation (OSELF) celebrated Mustapha A Njie as one of the most brilliant and gifted sons of the Gambia.

Njie is one of the few Gambians who are doing amazingly well in the field of eye care internationally and is the Head of OSELF Africa Chapter, a global non-profit making organization which has offices in 27 countries and is bent on eradicating refractive error in our lifetime.

“Mustapha`s story of ascending to the highest level of leadership is so inspiring as he is the first and only African to occupy such a position and oversee 12 African countries. Mustapha who graduated from the University of the Gambia led Onesight`s pilot project of sustainable vision care in the Gambia and he succeeded in opening seven vision centers across the Gambia and expanded the project to other African countries like Rwanda, Liberia, Zambia, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Malawi etc,” he stated.

Kinteh further reiterated that Mr. Njie won several international awards among that include the International Association for the Preventive Blindness (IAPB) Eye Health Hero 2018 whilst he was the regional manager of Expansion and Development, Africa, Onesight.

 “I believe stories like that of Mustapha will inspire so many youths in the Gambia that they can become anything that they set their minds to even in the most challenging situations. West Africans are special.”  

In the Gambia, OSELF under its philanthropy project in partnership with The National Eye Health Program under the Ministry of Health, has conducted 20 far-to-reach community outreaches since February and issued 4751 free eyewearers/glasses to students, poor and special needs people including people living with Albinism, People living with HIV and Aids, Mile 2 and Jeshwang Juvenile prisoners, and those hard of hearing. OSELF continues to conduct freer eye screening and issuing of glasses as it believes in helping the world to see more and be more.

'Who to blame' movie premier slated

By Elizabeth Cole One of the Gambia's talented filmmakers, who established Young Stars Movie Production have slated to premier another movie tittle 'Who To Blame' on March 6 at Pencha Mii hall. The production house that had started as a drama group in Brusubi, the Chief Executive Officer Modou Lamin Sowe said he was part of the founders and became the first president. He explained that they were inspired to form a movie production after shooting a movie tittle The Shadows of Our Culture' in Manduar, which brings lot of comments at home.   "That's the reason we decided to expand it instead being only for school drama thing."
