sensitization for communities in the Kombos
Gamcotrap in
collaboration with Save the Children International base in Dakar on the
prevention and the support on the violations and abuse against women and
children has recently organised a sensitization training and awareness creation
of Child Protection Community Communities (CPCC) in Kombo North, South, East
and Central on child protection against exploitation and women tasking
community members to uphold the knowledge gain during the training.
At the event held
in Tujareng, Dr. Agnes Campbell N. Kallay Senior Program Coordinator of Harmful
Practices Gamcotrap has explained that the purpose of the meeting is to train
and sensitize CPCC on the dangers involved on child exploitation, abuse and
violations against the children and women saying all human being are entitled
to their rights by virtue of being a human being.
she said it is
the responsibility of the duty bearers to ensure that the rights of the
children and women are protected and secure in their communities giving
reference in the 1997 Constitution of the women and children act that protects
the rights of women and children in in the country, thus adding that that the
individuals trained are different members of CPCC communities in which
their responsibilities is to communicate to the various community members on
the kinds of violations children and women face in their various communities.
Madam N. Kallay
outlined the role of the CPCC and added that among their responsibilities is to
ensure that the rights of children and women are protected especially in the
violation of the women through the brutal practice of FGM, child early
marriage, physical abuse and others noting that Gambia is part of the UN
conventions on the protection of women and children stated in the 1997 Constitution
under the women and children act in the Gambia and other institutions like Gamcotrap
in the safety course of women and children.
However, Senior Program
Coordinator Kallay mentioned the risks involved in child Labour, child abuse
and child exploitation adding that one of the major responsibilities of these
communities is to ensure that children remove from school are send back to
school, sensitize parents guidance on the parent child dialogue, protect the
persons of disability stressing that the abuse of any rights being it women or
a man is illegal and all human being has basic rights.
For his part,
Head of Finance Gamcotrap Musa Jallow has dilated on the project and saying is
a five years project that takes inception in 2017. He added that the project is
funded by Save the Children International through their regional office base in
Dakar which with the theme "reducing all forms of exploitation being it
psychological or physical abuses against boys and girls".
He cited that
four district are involved which is Kombo North, Kombo South, Kombo East and Kombo
Central given that this time last year they have embarked on series of
activities that was center around children issues including child rights ,
early marriage and FGM.
