Citizens assemble for peaceful co-existence
Development
Orientated Citizens (DOC) Banjul, an organisation geared towards eradicating
tribalism in the Gambia has called on citizens to assemble for peaceful
co-existence.
In
their quest towards putting an end to such atrocities, they therefore organized
a'' NO TO TRIBALISM'' day over the weekend held at ARCH22 in Banjul.
The
chairperson of the programme Mr. Omar TD Ndow said his tribe is The Gambia and
tribalism has no place in the country.
“When
Banjul was Banjul, there was nothing like division of people, no one knows
where one belongs. We lived in peace and harmony and this legacy should
continue. Who are we to destroy the peace that long co-existed.
He
further stated that they have seen enough examples of what tribalism yields,
adding that there are countries that experienced genocide due to tribalism and
we don't want such to repeat.
“There were intermarriages and they did
sacrifice for one and other to achieve the tranquilly and have a history to
tell to the next generation.”
He
urged every Gambian to give a second thought to their behaviours, speech and
actions to prevent anything that will prove detrimental to the Nation. “Those
living in the Nation are the only one entitled to its development, they are the
people to raise the flag proudly.”
Imam
Ebrima Faye of Banjul, who dealt with the religious aspect of tribalism and its
negative influence in a Nation due to its complexity, apologised to the public
for the outrageous comments that almost lead to tribal bigotry in the Country
by a son of Banjul.
“Tribe
is a divine word from God stating that ''God divided us into tribes to interact
and love one another''. Tribalism is the cancer of our society. Without addressing
it, it might lead to immense hatred,” he said.
Imam
Faye quoted in a hadith said “The best among men is the one who fears God''. He
urged everyone to join hands to end tribalism.
President
of Banjul youth committee Essaha sowe, highlighted that tribalism is a disease and
we should not allow it in our country.
“As
the name implies, we are all well acquainted with the Rwanda genocide, Nigeria
and sierra Leone. Anything that should trample upon our freedom of expression
should be undermined.
Interim
committee leader Abdoulie Njie explained that we need to showcase no to
tribalism for our future generation. “We are the ambassadors and advocates of
peace, stability and ethnic tolerance,” he pointed.
Dabakh Malick councilor of Banjul kampama ward
added that tribalism can never fit in the Gambia, saying teachers are doing
their best to end tribalism in schools.
