39 US Peace Corps swears to start work in Gambia
At least 39
peace corps volunteers from United State have swears to execute their duties in
their two years stay in the country to work on health and agriculture. The swearing
ceremony was held the US ambassador’s resident in Fajara.
The Peace
Corps is a service opportunity for motivated change makers to immerse
themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders to
tackle the most pressing challenges of our generation.
Dr. Isatou
Touray, the minister of Health and Social Welfare who delivered the keynote
address said such joint training, augur very well for cross sectorial
collaboration and implementation of joint projects. She added that it’s
gratifying to learn that the health sector training focused on several of the
ministry of health priority intervention areas, including the reproductive and
child health, maternal, infant and young child nutrition, malaria control,
hygiene and sanitation, and HIV and AIDS control.
“The Peace
Corps health project seeks to improve health status and quality of life,
particularly of women and children by promoting maternal neonatal and child
health, raising awareness for malaria prevention and control, education to our
communities on appropriate nutrition practices and promotion positive personal
hygiene and environmental sanitation practices,” she lamented.
She added
that majority of the volunteers are assigned at the rural areas to work with extension
staff and community members. She said they will serve as educators, catalyst
and change agents in all the regions of the country.
Shelly
Seaver, United States Charge d’affaires in The Gambia explained that since there
country founded, volunteerism work have been alive into America and happen to
improve people’ live in communities and strengthen the democracy. She added
that each year, over 60 million Americans volunteer to support in health care,
hunger and hormones, abuse of women and children, disaster and many other
societal problems.
“The Peace
Corps will be going to the all geographical regions of the country to work
directly with community and to build capacity and promote sustainable
development. More than 1,800 Peace Corps volunteers have serve in The Gambia
since the program was established in 1967,” she stated.
She thanked
the Peace Corps volunteers for being volunteering and assured commitment of The
Gambia to interact with them during their stay in the country.
The ceremony
ended by volunteers given speeches in the local languages and songs of wisdom.
