Barrow lays foundation stones for major roads, bridges
The
president Adama Barrow has laid the foundation stones of his government firs
development project for the construction of roads and building of bridges in
the Upper River Region (URR).
The ceremony
was held over the weekend at Basse and was graced by the vice president,
ministers, the Chinese ambassador and other authorities.
The
president explained that the roads and bridges will help link the communities,
reduce accidents, create easy markets and create easy access for the
transportation of goods from the ECOWAS region.
He calls on
the people of the region to make the best use of the roads and bridges, while
appealing for them to take it as their own.
He said this
is just the beginning of his development plans but calls on the people to
support him in completing his plans. He added that 2019 will be a turning point
for his government to create more infrastructures.
Bai Lamin
Cham, the minister of works and infrastructure thanked the Chinese government
for the great partnership, saying that no one has ever thought of Fatoto
Bridge, talk less of the roads.
He added
that the roads will go through Basse, Fatoto and then Koina. “The road will be
10m big and the length of 47.13 kilometers, at the highway we have Chamoi
Bridge of 25 meters, Stuwo Bridge, 2m, Fatoto Bridge, 170m and it will be 8m
high from the water, and Basse Bridge, 250m and it will be 15m high for the
boats to run under and roads from the north and the south bank will be
constructed cross the bridge.”
He said the
contract will be completed on 16th August, 2021, adding that China
supported the projects with $81 million (D4 billion).
