Gambia commits to fight clubfoot problem
The founder
of Gambia clubfoot foundation Dr. Ebou Camara has denounce that they are
committed in fighting clubfoot problem in The Gambia for sustainability.
He was
speaking during an opening training of medical doctors on basis ponseti
clubfoot treatment yesterday, which is funded by Miraclefeet in the USA.
He explained
that they came with the initiative of helping people with clubfoot problem
during their visit to the country’s hospitals, adding that they initiated the
training for doctors to learn and share with others, in order to fight clubfoot
in the country.
“We now
registered more than 300 patience and we know there are more. That’s why we’re
organising training for health workers in Serrekunda hospital and Banjul to
start the treatment in the country. We have equipments to be used to treat
babies’ burn with the problem,” he said.
He call on
the government to join them in eradicating clubfoot in The Gambia, saying they
cannot do it alone, instead need the government fullest support in either way. He
added that they had supported some children to overseen treatment in America
and they are also planning to take another four people.
Dr. Emmanuel
Samwel Kowero, a consultant from Tanzania who will be taking the practical
aspect to the trainers explained that he saw the spirit of helping people with
clubfoot in the face of the organisers. He said as our population grows, we
will have more patience and need strategy to cure it.
He added
that for sustainability, we cannot only depend on donors; instead the
government should help build the partnership with the foundation.
Dr. Alagie
Manneh lamented that without the support of Kanifing hospital, it would have been
difficult to them to carry out such a great initiative, saying that their
mission is to treat every child burn with clubfoot.
Karamo
Manneh, the Chief Executive Officer of Kanifing hospital stated that clubfoot
is a problem in the country, adding that globally 174, 000 are burn with
clubfoot which needs to be tackling.
While
thanking the health ministry, he challenged the trainers to learn and teach
others.
Dr. Samba
Ceesay, the acting director health services welcomed the great gesture of
clubfoot foundation in delivering their services to the community, saying that
his ministry is committed to upgrade in the general services of the health
sector.
