Outgoing French envoy affirms France continued support to Gambia
The outgoing
French ambassador to Senegal overseeing The Gambia His Excellency Christophe
Bigot has disclosed that his government is committed to continued support to
The Gambia‘s democracy, development in the area of agriculture, health, tourism
and security.
The ambassador
was speaking at a press briefing yesterday held at the French embassy alongside
Fajara.
H.E Bigot
explained that he went with the Vice President and the President to Kiona and Fatoto
to visit authorities for the education project they are implementing for the French
teachers. He added that as Gambia is part of the French speaking countries, it’s
important to have the necessary tools to promote French in schools.
“Gambia’s
democracy is very young and it needs to be protected. That is why we have
promoted the training of the Police intervention Unit (PIU) through the office
of the National Security Adviser, for 40 officers for two weeks and is the first
step. We will further build capacities because we consider it very important in
a democratic state for the police to abide by the role of law.”
He said the French
parliament and The Gambia have close bilateral relationship in the area of
sharing experience and capacity building, while adding that the French government
is committed in helping The Gambia in many aspects, most especially in the
field of agriculture, health, tourism and the security sector reform.
He lamented
that in the past years, he witnessed positive changes to the country’s democracy;
saying with the improvement, France decided to open a diplomatic antenna in
Banjul this year, and appoint a Charge d’Affairs who will represent France in a
more active way on the ground.
“We will also
help in the area of water and electricity early 2020. French teachers are also
getting assistance to enhance their language teaching capabilities. A new
French school will be opened this year at the French cultural centre, Alliance
Francais to promote the French language in The Gambia.
